Why shortcuts matter
Every time you lift your hand from the keyboard to reach for the mouse, navigate a menu, and click through to the option you need, you spend three to five seconds. Over a day of intensive Excel work, that adds up to minutes. Over a week, hours. Keyboard shortcuts are the single highest return-on-investment skill in Excel — a small one-time learning investment that pays back every time you open a spreadsheet.
You do not need to memorise all sixty at once. Learn five this week, five more next week. Within a month you will have a repertoire that makes you visibly faster than colleagues using the same tool.
How to learn them
The most effective method: every time you reach for the mouse to do something you do frequently, stop and look up the shortcut. Use it instead of the mouse, even if it feels slower at first. After three or four repetitions, the shortcut becomes muscle memory and is faster than the mouse equivalent.
